Christmas in the New Century

by Darrel Dionne

Marry what do you ponder

With your enigmatic smile

The child will come

To the soul pregnant with God

From the ashes of the old year

The new year rises

In life after life

The babe is born

Meanwhile a million million Herods

Sharpen their knives

The straw born child threatens

To upturn the kingdoms we have built

Altars to our greed and prejudice

Temples of hate and violence

The kingdom of self will fall

If the child is allowed to live

A new century was born

Twenty first since the babe

First split the hymened womb

And what have we learned

A few years into the new century

All the old crimes repeat themselves

But the star still shines

And the child will come
